Setting intentions is about more than setting goals, it entails consciously deciding what you want to prioritize, accomplish, or embody throughout the day. It involves making deliberate choices about your direction, focusing your attention, and welcoming specific energies. By setting intentions, you actively shape the type of day you'll experience and cultivate a mindful approach to your actions and interactions.
Intentions act as a roadmap for achieving what you desire by directing your energy and attention towards a specific goal, outcome, or feeling. This focused attention serves to keep you motivated, make better decisions, and take actions that align with your aspirations. Intentions are the driving force behind our daily endeavors, shaping our reality and influencing the outcomes we encounter. Without setting intentions, you relinquish control over the direction of your day, allowing external circumstances to dictate your mood and experiences. However, by setting intentions, you transition from feeling like a victim of circumstance to becoming a conscious creator of your days and life.
Here are some tips you might find helpful when it comes to setting intentions.
Take a few deep breaths, and tune into the feelings, activities, or actions you wish to invite in. Some guiding reflection questions that might help you answer this question, are "What is the behavior you desire to change?", "What do you want more of in your life?" "What do you want to focus on?" "How would you like to feel?".
Choose one moment every day where you will consciously reflect and write down your intention for the day ahead. Usually, it is recommended to do this in the morning, before your day starts. This allows you to clarify your priorities and focus your energy on what matters most.
Focus on what you want, instead of what you don't want. Use “I intend to” rather than “I don’t intend to”.
If you are faced with a difficult decision during the day, you find yourself racing from one meeting to the next, or you are simply overwhelmed, take time to remind yourself of your intention.
Here are some examples of intentions that can be used daily, depending on what your priorities are:
By incorporating these intention-setting practices into your daily routine, you can empower yourself to live with more purpose and fulfillment each day, ultimately propelling you toward the achievement of your long-term goals.
